Why Wide Feet Need Specific Sneakers (Not Just a Size Up)
About 17% of UK adults have a foot width measured as 2E or wider, according to the College of Podiatry's 2024 data. Buying a standard-width trainer one size larger does not solve the problem — it leaves the forefoot pinched while making the heel slip. True wide-fit sneakers retain the correct length but widen the forefoot last by 4–8mm and deepen the toe box by 2–3mm. Six brands sold in the UK make wide sizing standard or offer a dedicated 2E/4E line, and we tested ten models on a 45-minute London walking loop.
The Six Brands Worth Knowing
New Balance remains the gold standard: 68% of its men's trainers come in 2E (wide) and 4E (extra wide), including the 990v6, 991v2, 1906R and 574. HOKA applies its wide-toe-box philosophy to every model — no special width designation needed, as the standard last is already generous. Altra builds every shoe on a "FootShape" last that mirrors the human foot's natural splay. Brooks offers 2E and 4E across its running line. Saucony offers wide options in the Triumph and Guide series. ASICS has a dedicated Extra Wide (4E) line in Gel-Kayano and GT-2000. Nike and Adidas remain limited — most models are standard D width only.

Which Width Do You Actually Need?
Measure your forefoot width at home with a soft tape: under 100mm is D/Medium, 100–105mm is 2E/Wide, 105–110mm is 4E/Extra Wide, over 110mm is 6E. If your current trainers leave red pressure marks on the outside of your little toe after a day of wear, you're in 2E territory. If the top of your foot feels compressed rather than the sides, the problem is toe box height — HOKA and Altra solve that better than New Balance.
Wide-Fit Sneakers FAQ
Do HOKAs run wide out of the box?
Yes for most models. HOKA Clifton 10, Mach X and Gaviota 6 use a naturally wider forefoot last than Nike or Adidas equivalents. The Clifton 10 is the most-recommended starting point for wide feet by UK podiatrists in 2026.
Can I wear wide-fit New Balance with dress clothes?
Yes. The 991v2 and 990v6 in grey or navy suede are standard office-casual wear in London. The 2E width is visually indistinguishable from the D width to anyone not actively inspecting the shoe.
Are wide-fit running shoes more expensive?
No. Wide-fit New Balance and HOKA models cost the same RRP as their standard-width counterparts. Sale prices and discount availability are also comparable — we saw 2E 990v6 at £165 across 3 UK retailers in April 2026.
What about wide-fit luxury sneakers?
Very limited. Most Italian and French luxury sneakers are built on narrow European lasts. Veja and Common Projects run true to size but narrow. New Balance's Aimé Leon Dore 1906R collaborations and Teddy Santis 993 are the closest to "luxury wide" in 2026.
How do I break in wide sneakers?
Wear them indoors for 2–3 hours on day one, then gradually extend over a week. Wide-fit lasts rarely need breaking in, but new foam midsoles (HOKA Gaviota, NB 990v6 FuelCell) feel noticeably softer after 20–30km of wear.
If this is your first wide-fit sneaker, start with HOKA Clifton 10 (£140, natural wide last) or New Balance 990v6 in 2E (£210, proven fit). Both are in stock at 8+ UK retailers and take returns up to 28 days after purchase.
